Last night’s episode of Bones gave us another fascinating case and introduced many of us to a rare, yet interesting way doctors are able to restore some blind patients’ sight. On Bones, the squints found a tooth embedded in the victim’s shoulder. They realized that the blind victim was in the process of undergoing a series of surgeries to restore his sight.
Of course, the idea of using a tooth to make a blind man see again was a seriously amazing thing to even consider. So I went searching for more information about it.
The procedure has been successfully used before, but it involves a number of steps to complete the process. The process is known as modified osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (MOOKP) and is considered as a last resort when the patient’s body rejects a transplanted or artificial cornea.
The victim on last night’s episode of Bones had undergone only the first stage of preparing the tooth to contain a lens that would later be implanted in the eye of the blind man. The talented writing team for the show used the latest medical news to add just the right touch to the case the team solved.
If you want to find out more about the procedure, there’s a lengthy article located on the Medical News Today web site.

The team’s latest case takes Brennan back to her alma mater, Burtonsville High School, where she and Booth investigate the discovery of an unidentified skull and upper torso. With Angela’s help, they identify the victim as one of Brennan’s classmates, and notice a possible connection to a second murder committed 15 years prior. Brennan and Booth go undercover as a married couple at her class reunion to interrogate a set of suspects, where even as an adult, Brennan is still predictably misunderstood and her only friend lies in a strangely dark and offbeat janitor (guest star Englund). Meanwhile, Hodgins spills a lab secret in the all-new “The Death of the Queen Bee” episode of BONES airing Thursday, April 15 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (BON-517) (TV-14 D, L)

Here are some photos from the highly anticipated Bones episode that guest stars Robert Englund, who is best known for playing Freddie Kruger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. He’s going to play the high school custodian, and probably will be a very creepy character. We also see that Booth & Brennan will share a romantic dance or two.

The milestone 100th episode of BONES takes viewers back in time six years as Brennan and Booth recount the first case they worked on together. Thanks so much to Rebecca for this tip! Here are Michael Ausiello’s latest tidbits of spoilerage:
Question: Thanks for the all-Bones AA, but how could Caroline have helped with their first case when Brennan didn’t meet her until the season 1 episode, “Man in the Morgue?” – Hank Ausiello: Don’t you worry. Bones‘ continuity policy covered their tracks with one simple line, delivered by Booth to Brennan. Question: I noticed via Twitpic that you not only received the 100th episode of Bones, but the 99th as well. Any scoop — especially about page 187? —JR Ausiello: There’s actually a little page 187 nugget in my all-Bones AA. Yes, I realize I billed the column as being strictly about the 100th episode, but I accidentally intentionally included a little 99 scoopbit to see if you were paying attention. Question: What was the most shocking moment in Bones‘ 100th episode? —Diane Ausiello: The one that prompted Sweets to declare, “My book is crap!” [Source: EW]
